Fanclub

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

We wanted an internal rewards recognition scheme that allowed people to say ‘thanks’ to their colleagues all year round. We didn’t want it to just be all about the big stuff, we wanted to give those unsung every day heroes a chance to shine. So we created Fanclub, an internal social networking site, where people can not only nominate for our annual Superfans awards, but they can also just say thanks for a job well done.

I may be biased, but i think it’s revolutionised the traditional employee recognition model at O2. Instead of recognition being purely top-down, Fanclub makes it a peer-to-peer process; it’s ‘recognition for our people, by our people’.

It was also really important that whatever we did, we made sure it was aligned to our customer promise - that is after all what underpins our whole way of working here at O2, so we wanted to make sure people could use it every day to help recognise others for their behaviours.

At the last count - we’ve got 7000 people registered on Fanclub and between them they have left 12,000 applauses for each other. The applauses are displayed on their personal Fanclub page.

Our Fanclub site is also where you can nominate someone for Superfans - our prestigious annual awards event. 2009’s inaugural Superfans event was held simultaneously at sites in London, Glasgow and Leeds. A live video link-up connected the three events, which were hosted by Matthew Horne, James Corden and Reggie Yates. The Superfans nights were a massive success and we know our people are really looking forward to this years event already!

Before I start my blog, I make a cup of coffee and switch on the radio – I like a little background noise when I’m working. I can hear the usual ramblings of a travel update… an accident on the M3 (my route to the O2 offices), 2 lanes closed north-bound, delays up to an hour… it’s just another reason I’m glad to be a home worker! I smile to myself and switch off the radio. Who needs that first thing on a Monday morning?!
I drink my coffee. I’m trying to decide what I’d like to share about life at O2, what would be interesting, helpful…?  I think back to when I first started working here and I’m actually startled to realise I’ve been with O2 for 6 years now! Where did the time go?
I started contracting at O2 in 2004, my role was to design and implement a health and wellbeing campaign that would run across the UK over a 4 month period. I introduced activities like mobile masseurs (who massage people at their desks), weight loss classes, yoga sessions and stress awareness workshops.  High participation levels and overwhelming feedback made it clear early on that health and wellbeing was more important to O2 people than we had initially anticipated.
Fast forward to 2010 and my lowly role has evolved into a small but mighty team, powering a whole raft of health and wellbeing services that range from confidential counselling to private medical insurance. Listening to what our people have to say about their day to day experience at O2 and how it impacts their wellbeing is an integral part of my role.¼br> I think the biggest satisfaction for me has come from taking that insight and turning it into meaningful initiatives that our people truly value.  Now, no matter where I work I’m never more than a click away from our health and wellbeing website or from taking a health assessment and receiving my own personalised report… mind you, I’m running out of excuses not to stick to my New Year resolutions!
