a big leap

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

I was 18 years old soon to be leaving sixth form. I decided to take the big leap and look for full time employment! I walked into a recruitment agency and there was an opportunity to join a company to work on the telephones in customer service and start training the following week! Wow I thought that was quick, but gulp what am I letting myself in for! That company was O2! It was a bit daunting at first with all these new faces, it really took me out of my comfort zone. However people were so supportive and willing to help and make you feel welcome and it was really exciting learning new skills and working with mobile phone technology.Within a year of joining I was offered a permanent contract. This was such a big thing to me and opened up so many opportunities it really boosted my self confidence and independence. Within 2 years of joining I was in a position where I was able to leave the nest and buy my own home!

O2 is very keen on supporting you in your personal development as well as recognising you for a job well done. I have worked in a number of different departments as well as stretching myself by applying and successfully achieving promotion. I’ve learned new skills, met lots of different people and made some great friends. I even met my wife at O2 and we now have a little baby son!

Our new look store - pop in and see us!

The O2 Store in the White Rose Shopping Centre has been open for 3 years now. The Store has been closed for the last 7 days being totally refitted and turned in to a new store design store. All the handsets are now live which is a culture shock to our customers and to be honest the team here as well! Customers love picking up handsets and actually being able to play with them and see what they can do. Much much better than dummy handsets. The team have all gone through the new training and are really excited for when we re-open. We have recruited 5 new team members - 3 part timers and 2 new gurus. The Guru is a new role to our store, something else to be excited about! The gurus are responsible for making sure the whole team are kept up to date with what’s happening out there in the connected world. They are our techie geeks and translate all things technical into simple easy to understand language for our customers, and some of the team too!

If your every nearby, call in and say hello and meet the team :-)

My job feels very worthwhile

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

One of the great experiences and skills I have achieved from working at O2 was when I trained to be a face to face interviewer. Once trained I was then allowed to conduct face to face interviews at the selection events across Leeds and Bury sites on a regular basis.I gained so much more confidence with the skills that I have gained and this helped me to  give feedback to candidates which in turn helps them progress with their career; this gives me  great satisfaction both on a professional and personal level.

Increasing my skills has led me to progress them further by progressing and been trained on performance based interviews. In my personal opinion I believe these interviews to be much better as this allows you to gather so much more evidence to help make a decision as examples have to be a specific example rather than hypothetical answer, helping to gain a better employee for O2 to help turn our customers into Fans.

Doing face to face interviews at selection events is really interesting as no one interview is the same and you meet so many different people. One of the most satisfying things is when you see a candidate that you passed and they see you around the building and they say thanks and tell you how much they are enjoying the new role. The rapport you build gives me a great sense of achievement and makes my job feel very worthwhile and I would not change that for the world.
