Its Review time!!

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

As 2010 begins the next big focus is Annual Performance Reviews…… managers are busy writing them and in the run up to Christmas I was busy thinking about the things I did in 2009 that I am proud of.

2009 marked my first full year as a Resourcing Assistant and what a year it has been. One of my main achievements was working as Reflect Champion for the team were I got the chance to be involved in some of the great things we have done as a result of Reflect, our annual employee engagement survey.

I really enjoyed taking part in a team building day at Iveson Primary School in Leeds where the whole Resourcing Team got together and helped to build a path and do gardening in the school. I also enjoyed putting together a library for the office and having meetings with my colleagues to find out how they felt we could improve our working environment.

I also completed my Certificate in Personnel Practice in 2009, with the support of O2 I managed to achieve a Distinction! What an achievement! In December I was quick to get my ‘Learning Fund’ started – a matched funding scheme that’s part of the Flexible Benefits package I receive. This has helped me fund a postgraduate qualification, the Certificate in Personnel and Development that I started in September, another thing I am proud of.

The nicest thing about APR time is that it reminds me of all the things I achieved in 2009 and motivates me to make 2010 a year that really counts. It’s great to get some recognition for achievements and the opportunity to get support for the things I need to develop, it’s lovely to take the time to have a chat with my manager and see how she thinks I am doing.

Here’s to a successful 2010!

Everyday brings new experiences

January, as ever, heralds not just the onset of a new year but the enviable review of the one passed.  I thought that I’d take sometime out from the busy world of Management Insight and share with you some of my personal highlights working in o2. As ever we have strived to meet the demands and expectations of customer base in an ever changing market place.  This places a unique challenge on our business analysts to find new levels of insight to understanding and develop out customer thinking and strategy.   I think the biggest excitement has come with developments that we have made with o2Money and the customer uptake of the proposition.  For me this represents a pretty bold move in an emerging market place, one that I think we have delivered on.

We have increased the focus that we have place on our customer base, enhancing our customer relationship management process.  In turns this has led to an overhaul in my area in which I have waved good by to some colleague and welcomed some new ones in.  As ever I am looking forward to this reorganisation moreover, our ability to steer or service propositions

Of course on a personal front I recently travelled over to Brazil with a host of other volunteers from all over Europe, with the telefonica foundation programme.  Phew what an adventure, and what a group of people to meet.  A group now that includes many friend, let see how my pale Scottish skin holds up to the sun in Madrid with this years summer holidays already firmly on my mind.

I have just completed my flexible benefits arrangement!  So that’s £80 a month of my salary and a nice £40 commitment from o2 to help me with my programme of learning, fluency in Spanish here I come.  That said I am can already order two beers so I guess it would be good to know who to ask for a chemist and some resolve.

Hasta luego!

New Year New Career

New Year New Career?The clock strikes midnight, everyone cheers, glasses are chinking and people who never sing in public are trying to pretend they know the words to Auld Lang Syne. After sending a hundred text messages and hugging people that you hardly know you tell everyone that this is THE year.

This is the year you, loose a few pounds, pay off the credit cards or get that all important new job which will change your life forever.

So now we are halfway through January and you are sick of the sight of mince pies and trudging into work in the snow and rain. It’s definitely time to start looking but how? Well here are some quick tips to get you started…

1. Get prepared;Make sure your CV is up-to-date and get someone you trust to look at it for you and give you some constructive criticism. If have profiles on networking sites like
LinkedIn make sure they are up-to-date and if you don’t have one yet, why not get one? 2. Do a bit of research;Are there companies that you would love to work for? Visit their careers site and have a look for jobs. Lots of employers offer you the opportunity to create your own profile and get email alerts when jobs you might like come up (we do!)

3. Who do you know?

Recommendation is a great way to find a job. Ask your friends and network contacts if they know of any opportunities that you might be interested in, you might be surprised what you hear about when people know you are interested. Lots of employers reward their employees with bonuses if they recommend a friend (again, we do!) so your friend will definitely be happy to help.

4. Make your CV work for itself;

Before you start applying for a job take some time to tailor your CV. Make sure you highlight the skills the advert mentions.

5. Be selective;

There are loads of great job boards out there and they all offer you the opportunity to upload your CV. Try to be selective with the job boards that you choose to do this on, make sure they have the types of jobs you are looking for first.

6. Get help from the right people;

These days the internet offers you loads of ways to search for jobs. But there are still some great agencies out there. If you want some help from an agency then make sure you choose one that specialises in the areas you need, and try to get a recommendation from a friend. Again it helps to be selective.

I hope this helps and most of all good luck…Louise
