It’s great to see

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

I was recently told that I was well known around Leeds, which I found a bit alarming! But what they actually meant was that when I walk around the building here in Leeds, there are always people that says hello and ask how I am.

I have worked at O2 for 7 years now and have got to know lots of people, recently I have been working on the recruitment of Technical Support Analyst for Broadband. As well as meeting potential employees when they attend the assessment centres, I also see some of them when they have started work here - not many people like attending interviews and can be quite nervous when they attend an assessment, so when I see them after they have started. It’s great because they look relaxed and genuinely happy to be here and all the things about O2 that I talk about at the assessments, they are beginning to see for themselves and as time goes on you can see that they have really settled in to life at O2 and have made new friends.

One of the things that I talk about at assessments is the chance for progression and if that is what you want in your career then O2 is the place to be, I was recently talking to a couple of the people that started in Broadband as a Support Analyst last year, one is now manages a team and the other is now in training – which is great news!.

Chesnut Lodge

Over the last few years I’ve been lucky enough to be involved in a fantastic project, with Chesnut Lodge, a school in Widnes for physically handicapped kids that was started by Sandra, one of our lovely advisors. She’s been involved with the school for years and has done some great work with them. We offer a group of kids work experience with us, just to get a feel of what it’s like in the workplace.

The project is really popular with everyone and lots of people get involved in all different ways. The most popular role is as a mentor for one of the kids. We have to share the roles out to make sure everyone gets a look in and everyone wants to work with the kids. Its amazing how inspirational is us for our guys to work with the kids and that feeling seems to be contagious. I saw people I’ve known for ages in a totally different light and really come out of themselves. But then, that’s the whole point of the project for all of us. Everyone wants to chat to them and give them gifts and for a few days, those kids are like celebrities in here!

I worked with Andy; one of the other trainers, to put together a two day program of tasks to complete and to make sure they have the most varied experiences. We wanted to make sure that they didn’t stay in one area and met loads of people and saw lots of different roles within the company.

Various departmental heads came to chat to the kids about O2 and what their department does and were involved in the presentations at the end. We give each of them a goody bag (including a nice new phone) and a certificate of achievement for their experience.

The kids wrote a little about their time here. This is what they said:

‘I met new friends and I really enjoyed everything. I really had a laugh with my new friends and want to say that I love my new friends and I want to thank everyone.’

Laura

‘My favourite part was listening to calls and working for O2 was really fun. People work really hard here and I played on the raffle and won a joke trick and Knowsley Safari Park tickets.’

Dale

‘The favourite part of my day at O2 was being with Lisa and Kerry, going upstairs and joking with Dave. Picking on Banana Man and playing basket ball on the street’

Jess

‘While as was at work experience with O2, I enjoyed meeting Dann1, Tracey, Mark and Lisa. I also liked John, who dressed up as Banana Man. I listened in to calls and liked that a lot. I am really happy because I got a certificate at the end and a new pink phone.’

Tanya

‘Best thing was all the lovely ladies, Marylyn Monroe was the best’
