Coming and Going
Thursday, September 25th, 2008Something that never stops here at O2 is people coming and going. Either new people coming into the business, people moving from one department to the other and people moving up the ladder.
A common mistake that people make is that because we’re often recruiting, we must loose a lot of people and have to replace them, but this isn’t the case. We gain hundreds of customers per day, and we need to make sure we have enough advisors to be able to take the calls. We don’t want our customers having to sit in a queue, so we plan and forecast how many people to recruit and for which area.
There have been lots of changes in our customer base of late, so that determines where we need to move work streams (which is a posh name for departments) Things like Broadband or the iPhone has generated loads more calls into areas (Because of their popularity) that wouldn’t usually have taken them. People are often retrained to be able to have the skills to take calls from more than one department, so that we can work with the ebb and flow of customers needs. Sometimes when a work stream is really busy, people from quieter departments pitch in.
As L&D, We get involved in moves like this often, as we help to retrain people on new systems and with new call skills. We get to see old friends that we’ve met on inductions and other courses and brush up on our departmental knowledge. Sometimes it’s all hands to the pump to make sure everyone is trained by certain deadlines, so people are training on different sites and being really flexible to fit in with our business plans.
Some of our people in L&D are moving into operational roles too, which is a shame for us to loose them, but great for people taking new opportunities throughout the business. We wish them good luck as they move on with their journey.
If you have any questions about oportunities to move within the business, leave me a comment and i’ll get back to you.
